Napa and Sonoma Valleys are the epitome of wine country. With over 1700 wineries, it’s easy to see why. Visiting this region can be fun, whether you are a solo traveler or going with a group. You will always remember that first taste of your favorite wine and the laughter that echoed through vineyards.

To make the most of your trip, we offer the following recommendations.

We strongly suggest that you hire a driver for the day. The cost to hire a limo and/or driver is much less than the cost of a DUI. The California Highway Patrol and local law enforcement are serious about keeping people safe in wine country and are constantly on the lookout for impaired drivers. Trust us on this one. Hire the driver.

We propose doing a little research and making reservations for wine tastings before you go. Are you looking for just a wine tasting or are you looking to elevate your experience? If you want to take a winery tour, class, food and wine pairing, or have a special tasting, it’s even more likely that an appointment will be needed.

While you will be tempted to visit as many wineries as possible, we suggest only visiting three or four in a day: one in the morning, one at lunch, and one or two in the afternoon. This will allow you to enjoy each winery to its fullest. You will be able to talk to the people and appreciate both the wine and the surroundings at a leisurely pace.

Tasting wine can be fun, but be prudent and drink responsibly. You want to be safe, feel good, and remember your experience. It’s important to have solid meals when you are wine tasting. There are a lot of great restaurants and stores selling delicious picnic food. Make time to enjoy them. It’s also important to stay hydrated. Drinking water will also help keep your palate clear. Make sure to bring plenty of water with you.

Purchase some wine. That’s what you’re there for after all! However, you will need to check your state laws to see if the wine can be shipped home. If it can’t, you will need to plan on carrying it home in your checked baggage.
